The champagne offer that wasn't.
Tesco recently ran an offer of 50% off Louis Delaunay champagne plus an extra 25% off if ordering more than six bottles before 22nd April.
As we wanted 48 bottles for my son’s wedding we went online to Tesco on 20th April and placed the order. It was stated that the final discount would not show until the end of the transaction so we clicked on payment of £623.52 in the belief that a further £155.88 would be deducted.
It turns out that there are different departments: Tesco ‘groceries’ and Tesco ‘wine by the case’. The offer was in ‘groceries’ but not in ‘wine by the case’ – nowhere on the website was this flagged up. As I wanted 48 bottles it was logical to click on wine by the case – even if we had realized it was a different department the offers would be the same – wouldn’t they?
We believe this to be a tricksy and opaque way of doing business. Although we did absolutely nothing wrong we have been charged £155.88 more than we budgeted for. Tesco customer services offers their sorrow at our disappointment but of course, nothing more.
