In most cases, when you find yourself in need of a rental car, you’re between a rock and a hard place. You might have been in an accident. Or maybe your car is in the shop for a few weeks and you have to get to work and back. You may be on vacation and need a way to get around in an unfamiliar place, or you could have a road trip planned and don’t want to put unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle. Whatever the case may be, most of us don’t spend a great deal of time researching various car rental places. We just want to get the car as soon as possible and get on with what we’re doing.

Well, car rental places know this, and the less-reputable ones will try to capitalize on it. Let’s say you went to a couple of websites and found a great deal on a rental car. A mid-size sedan with all the features. The price per day is very reasonable and includes gas mileage and insurance. So you go into the rental place and they tell you that deal is only available if you book online. If you come in and book in person, it’s going to cost you twenty dollars more. Of course, to any informed consumer, it’s obvious what the company is doing – they are hoping you’ll throw up your hands and say, “Fine, whatever, I’ll just pay the extra fee,” because you want to get it over with. Great customer service, right?

There are other tricks, too. Like the old gas-mileage scam. When you rent the car, you’re told to bring it back with three quarters of a tank of gas. So that’s exactly what you do. But they say there is not enough gas, and charge you an extra $8 per gallon. Of course this goes right onto the credit card you used to rent the car. How can you prove you brought it back with enough gas? You could take a photo, but who thinks of that? Most of us don’t anticipate getting ripped off.

We as consumers have to stand up against these instances of blatant over-charging and deceptive sales practices. Most people would agree that we can just walk away from a bad deal. But when you’re in another city and in need of a car, it’s not always possible to do that. But there’s something you can do – tell your story! The only way those slimy car rental companies will be stopped is if you share your story with others. Don’t let them get away with it. Post your complaint today and the word out.
