Electric shut off then required to pay an additional $710 - Duke Energy

I have been a customer for 11 years with Progress Energy/Duke Energy and this past month forgot to pay my bill, without notice they turned off my electric and as soon as I figured out what happened I paid the bill immediately and service was restored.

A week later I received a letter in the mail stating I have to put a one time deposit of $710 down on top of my normal monthly bill and they would hold the deposit for 24 months until I have a consecutive 24 month without late payments.

This was the first time I didn’t pay the bill in 11 years then all of a sudden have to come up with $710 to put down as a deposit, I have 5 children and live paycheck to paycheck barely making ends meet but now I’m forced to pay more.

I called customer service and explained this was the first time in 11 years but they were not willing to adjust the amount at all only break the payments into 6 monthly payments.
