I am a former employee of the Fireplace Doctor. I left the company after being injured on the job and finding that the company did not have insurance to cover the injuries. I still continued to work for the company because I needed a job to pay the bills. Then my paycheck was bouncing and other employees were having the same problem.

The owner, Dean Joyner, was having us charge extravagant prices for services, often having us do the work without pulling proper permits, but yet couldn’t cover our paychecks.

I sued The Fireplace Doctor and won the case. However, The Fireplace Doctor never showed up for court and responded to the charges.

Don’t do business with this company.

Upon receiving our Living Social voucher we called The Fireplace Doctor and made the earliest appt. they offered which was November 26. Then they called us in November and postponed until January 7. They called us again in December and stated they no longer serve our area and cancelled the appointment. They offer no refunds and trying to get a refund through Living Social…expect to be on the phone for 15 minutes until they pickup to talk about it.

Same negative opinion as everyone else. These guys are a fraud, plain and simple. I've already contacted the better business bureau about them. They take your money and then postpone the appointment for 6 weeks, then reschedule 3 times, then no show and cancel their business phone #. The owner of this company is a major POS!

No Show, No Show, No Show,
I waited 6 weeks for a first available apt on 11/30. I called them 7 days prior to confirm apt. On 11/30 no call no show all day. I called them at 3:00pm and was told they were not coming at all. The tech had quit and they did not get a replacement nor did they call his clients to cancel. They re-set me to 12/8 with a tech from farther away. On 12/6 they called to cancelled apt and move me to 1/15/13 the next year! On 12/7 they called to say there they could get me back on for 12/8.
I waited until 1:15 p.m. Again no call, no show. When I contacted them I was told the technician would not be coming at all. That he decided not to work. All day they knew he was not working and yet they did not even call to cancel. I have wasted 2 whole days waiting for them and many months of not being able to even use my fireplace.

After waiting 6 weeks for my appointment, they called to cancel due to bad weather. There was no bad weather. They rescheduled for a week later for 1:00, at 2:00 I started calling to see if they were going to show. They said yes, he's just running late. I waited until 5:00, never showed and never called. I've never dealt with such horrible customer service.

Purchased a living social voucher from the Fireplace Doctor. Made my appt late october for 12/1. They never showed or called. When i called to inquire where they are, they informed me that they had "lost" their technician for my area (northern DE) and i would have to call living social to get a refund. They had weeks to call and cancel and never did. now it will take probably at least a month to have my fire place swept and inspected and it cannot be used until that happens, which means my heating bill is going to keep climbing. They are horrible! the customer service rep did not even offer an apology!

Please use any other company. As horrible as they treat their customers, they treat the office staff and technicians even worse.

They are correct them treat there employees like throw aways. Honestly that's all they are to James Dean Joyner!

i will cancel my Groupon service because of merchants like the Fireplace Doctor of Cincinnati, OH. I called and scheduled an appointment 2 months out then the Fireplace Doctor of Cincinnati renigged on the offer so the groupon had to be cancelled. This establishment has NO integrity at all. I called them directly and the gal that answered the phone couldn't have cared less and simplay stated that the Groupon just wasn't enough money. Select another reputable vendor!!!

Purchased the Living Social. Set up an appointment which took 7 weeks to find an open slot. One day before the appointment they call to cancel and reschedule 7 weeks later…. I canceled the living social. Called "A Step in Time" they were able to show up 2 days after calling. Do not waste your time with this company.

I had the same issue with Groupon. I scheduled an appointment and it was rescheduled for two months later (which was today). They didn't cancel, they just didn't show up. I called and they left a message that they were not operating in the area (San Antonio) anymore and to call Groupon to get a refund. These guys are so unprofessional. I'm glad Groupons gave me my money back. Groupons needs to be more responsible in the vendors they promote on their website.

Purchased groupon in the spring from the one in Philadelphia. They postponed because they had a 'route' change. Called after they failed to show up the 2nd time. They said that they cancelled the Groupon as a buisness decision. LOL. Good decision. Glad that Groupon refunded me. BEWARE – they are not an honorable business.

  10. This is one of the reasons why I take time to read some reviews about a certain product I want to buy before purchasing it just to make sure that I am getting a great deal for my money.

  11. Baltimore Area on said:

I have cancelled my Groupon emails–mostly because of this service. I'm SO sorry I didn't read these reviews first. They wanted to clean my chimney during a major thunder storm. Got it rescheduled but when they cleaned the chimney they found the extra $2000'ish of work needed. They either failed to clean a part and left the flu disconnected. We are having to now spend more money to have new parts installed. And I guess they used chemicals maybe–the tree in front of the chimney started turning brown shortly after the cleaning. The tree is now dead.

Purchased Groupon back in the spring. Made an appointment and then had to cancel because of bad weather. Rescheduled for today. Took the day off from work and waited. No show. Called them nd they told me they canceled all their Groupon deals and Groupon should have told me. No, YOU shouldhave called me. My appointment was with YOU! Groupon refunded my money and said they had chosen to no longer do business with them. Crazy.

  13. Dan O'Toole on said:

This outfit is definitely a scam – don't let these guys in your house – they will tell you your fireplace needs 2,000 in repairs and never perform the work stated on your estimate. I figure I got took for at least 1,000 –

  14. Ken on said:

Wish I would have read these reviews before I called Fireplace Doctor. Same story – made an appointment 6 weeks ahead, took day off work on day of appointment and no call, no one shows up. Reschedule and again, nothing. This place is a sham.

  15. Michelle on said:

I had them cancel my appt 3 times and on the 4th time no show. I called Groupon and they refunded my money.

  16. Virginia on said:

The Fireplace Doctor of Cincinnati does not keep its word – is unreliable. they made three appointments and canceled each on short notice. Groupon knows about problems with them, but still allows them to advertise with them. This makes me question whether or not i want to do business with Groupon, as well.

  17. Disappointed in Cinc on said:

My experience with both Fireplace Doctor and with Groupon is, to say the least, disappointing. I bought two FP DR Groupons back in July and scheduled my cleanings for August. They proceeded to cancel and reschedule my appointments three times with little to no explanation and I have little hope that they will ever honor their commitment. Phone messages to FP DR go unanswered and it appears that Groupon has shown little initiative in resolving the issue – refusing to find out why they are treating me this way and just saying they told them to call me – which FP DR has not done. In addition apparently Groupon is okay with this treatment since they have allowed this merchant to advertise with them again in September 2012. Experiences like this give Groupon a bad name. Several people I know have experienced similar disappointments and have canceled their membership with Groupon and won't be doing business with the Fireplace Doctor, either.

I dont get how Dean is still allowing this company to go on. This company is joke and he treats his employees like crap. This company is one big scam just to get money. They will tell you that you need a repair and you really don't. They have to make 5000 in bids and 5000 in collections every week per person. Plus they make 3 percent commission so that's why the prices are so jacked up. Most of the people who work there are criminals who can't get real jobs and are drugs users. No one who works there is trained properly and all they want is sales who cares if the job is done right. Thank god I dont have to get up at 3 in the morning and drive 4 hours to some city to get back home at 8 at night and do it all again the next day. I never seen someone treat there employees so bad.

  19. unknown on said:

Yeh Ryan we were all pretty much taken advantage of and I wish the owner would of atleast given us some time off from work to actually spend time with my family. I mean Dean wouldnt even give me a day off because we didnt have good sales going on. I mean how did he expect to sell 10000 a week and then be able to do everything else we had to do. Then we had the piece of crap vans that they would buy from auction and would break down after one day of being out on the road. LOL I think that I could go on all day about this but oh well I think they will get what is coming to them and hopefully they feel the pain that we felt.

  20. previous employer on said:

wow i didnt think other employees felt this way. it is all a scam. totally unfair to all who work for them and the customers. its not the techs fault. i was just trying to find a decent steady career to start myself with to support my family and the whole ecpierience was just horrible……….

  21. unknown on said:

Yeh ryan I didnt even get my pay check and they left me hanging and changed there phone number on top of that.

Here is there new number 850-736-8800

And here is the owners number 706-566-3944 and ask for dean joyner

I can also confirm the previous employees comment posted on july 22nd as I was a previous employee of the fireplace doctor. They overwork their employees at an average of 60 to 70 hours per week at a disgusting pay rate of up to 600$ weekly. EVERYTHING the previous employee said about the company is TRUE. They use groupon to get their foot in the door and then scare you into repairs and their prices are very high next to a real contractor that would be local to you and doing fair business. Their masonry experience within their company is the most pathetic unproffessional I have ever experienced in the 14 years I have been within the trade. I am simply posting this due to the fact the company didnt pay me my final paycheck and I would be happy to hurt their business in return.

  23. unknown on said:

I use to work for them it is all a scam just to get money from you. The owner of the company went bankrupt years back because one of his employees was drinking and driving and hit someone and he got a lawsuit. The company itself has criminals working for him ranging from concaine possesion to other drugs. The training these guys go through to become techinicans is awful, they are usually on the road 12 hrs a day just to get to your house and trust me they dont care one bit about the customers.

They work close to 70 hrs a week and get paid very little. Oh and when they say your chimney needs work trust me im 99% sure you dont. They work off commision based pay and trust me that is why your chimney needs work. I wouldnt trust these guys to step forward in your house for no reason trust me those $59.00 groupons your buying is just for them to get in your house and let you know your chimney needs $5000.00 dollars worth of work. Always call another chimney company out before making a decision on what they tell you.

I also bought a Groupon with The Fireplace Doctor for Austin, Tx. My appointment was scheduled for yesterday from 2-4. I called to verify my appointment, they said it was 3-5. No one showed at all. I called this morning to find out what happened and they couldn't tell me. They offered to reschedule for sometime on my own time, so that I wouldn't have to take off of work, but their computer was down. They said they'd call me back when their computer was up and running. I'm still waiting for their call. I'm beginning to think they don't want to do the job for Groupon customers, or they are just a non-existent company.
